As the calendar flips into August and the anticipation rises to a fever pitch among fantasy football enthusiasts it got me thinking: is August really the most wonderful time of the year?
For a kid, and as the song says, Christmas time has traditionally been regarded as the most wonderful time of the year. You wait months for it to get here, you scour resources to put together your wish list you want Santa to bring and you gather with friends and family to celebrate.
Sound familiar?
For me, as a child of the late 70s and early 80s, my wish list was the Sears catalog. I remember flipping through the pages and marking which things I wanted, I didn’t get everything I marked but I knew that I would be getting some of those things on that list. Would it be the fully articulate Fran Tarkenton figure or the Chuck Foreman jersey, you never knew and it increased the anticipation
Today, as an old fantasy player, my wish list is my draft sheet. I spend hours compiling it, marking those players I want and those that I want no part of.
Then, just like Christmas time, you have to wait for draft day morning to see what Santa is going to bring you. Sometime you get what you want, sometimes what you want breaks a week after you get it (White Tiger?) and sometimes you just get a pair of socks.
Most importantly and certainly not least is gathering with friends and family. And yes, the ECFFL is a family, it might be a tad dysfunctional at times but I wouldn’t exchange it for any other league or group of dudes out there. There is a reason owners make every possible effort to make it to the draft. Those 4 days in August are one of
